Synopsis

Un jeune Antillais homosexuel, tueur de vieilles dames dans le XVIIIe arrondissement, une Lituanienne venue tenter sa chance à Paris, une dynamique professeur de karaté pour femmes d’âge mur. Tous se croisent, s’observent et leurs trajectoires peu à peu se recoupent dans ce film inspiré d’un fait divers réel, l’affaire Guy Paulin. Un jeu de l’oie dans un Paris estival à l’atmosphère trouble. Cinéaste humaniste, Claire Denis sait respecter la zone d’ombre de chacun de ses personnages. Ode sans effusion dans le XVIIIème arrondissement de Paris, le film montre comment les différentes populations qui l’habitent le réinventent, chacune à sa façon.

A young gay Afro-Caribbean, a killer of old ladies in the eighteenth arrondissement, a young Lithuanian woman immigrates to try her luck in Paris, a dynamic karate teacher for mature women. They all meet, observe each other and their trajectories gradually intersect in this film inspired by the real-life French serial killer case of Thierry Paulin. A snakes and ladders game set in a cloudy summer Parisian atmosphere. Humanist filmmaker Claire Denis knows how to respect the dark side of each of her characters.
