Synopsis

Poème cinématographique, Ana Ana donne cours à l’imaginaire de quatre jeunes femmes artistes dans un Caire contemporain, où leurs droits, au lendemain de la Révolution de 2011, demeurent fragiles et menacés. Projet né d’un atelier vidéo mené sur deux ans par les réalisateurs et les jeunes femmes elles-mêmes, le film use de la forme narrative cinématographique pour exprimer sur un mode extrêmement intime, leurs rêves et leurs désirs. Les circonstances politiques et sociales se mêlent aux préoccupations propres à chacune comme l’amour ou la créativité. Des images d’un Caire en chaos, en passant par des vues désertiques abstraites, ce que ces voix nous racontent, ce n’est finalement rien de moins qu’une histoire de désir universel de liberté.

A cinematic poem about four young creative Egyptian women. Set in an Egypt where the dreams of the 2011 revolution have begun to unravel, and where women’s rights are tremendously vulnerable. Most of the material is filmed by the characters themselves, who worked with the film’s directors over a course of two years. They find ways to express what is hidden within their hearts: speaking of their dreams and desires in an open and intimate way, and using metaphors, and cinematic storytelling to transform the every-day struggles of their lives into the sublime. Set in the overwhelming chaos of Cairo, the film also oscillates back and forth between an empty and abstract desert, which might be real or unreal. Their voices tell a story about the universal desire for creativity and freedom.
