Synopsis

Naoshima est une petite île japonaise de la mer intérieure de Seto qui abrite depuis les années 1990 un fascinant projet de mécénat d’art contemporain. Sous l’impulsion d’un entrepreneur, musées et instalations en plein air se sont multipliés sur Naoshima, jusqu’alors habitée de pêcheurs, de paysans et d’ouvriers, et marquée par l’exode post-industriel, un déclin de la population et de son économie locale. Le documentaire explore cette île, terrain d’échanges inattendus entre art contemporain, traditions et vie quotidienne. 8 km2 d’une utopie racontée par ses habitants.

Naoshima is a small Japanese island in the Seto inland sea hosting a fascinating contemporary art sponsoring project since the 90s. Urged by a businessman, museums and outdoor installations have grown in number on Naoshima, which was until then only populated by fishermen, farmers and workers, and affected by the post-industrial exodus, a decline in population and its local economy. The documentary is the exploration of this island, as a place for unexpected exchange between contemporary art, traditions, and everyday life. 8 km2 of a utopia as told by its inhabitants.
