Neko fait partie du peuple des Nenets qui vivent dans la toundra sibérienne. On est dans les années quatre-vingt et l’Union soviétique de l’époque procède au déplacement des Nenets parce que l’on suppose que d’immenses gisements de gaz se trouvent dans le sous-sol des terres qu’ils habitent. Neko vit avec son père et sa grand-mère en pleine solitude. Ils se déplacent en kayak, attrapent des poissons et chantent les chansons des chamans. L’enfance idyllique de Neko touche à sa fin lorsque sa mère l’envoie contre son gré dans un internat soviétique. Il ne faut plus compter en rennes et en poissons mais avec des chiffres. Cela va mal tourner… Le film se base sur les souvenirs d’enfance de la réalisatrice Anastasia Lapsui. — Neko is a member of the Nenets people who live in the Siberian tundra. It is the eighties and, under the former Soviet Union, the Nenets are being driven off their lands – just as they are today – on account of vast gas reserves that are suspected underneath their homelands. Neko lives with her father and grandmother in a tent in the midst of nowhere. They paddle their kayaks, catch fish, and play and sing shamanistic songs. But then, one day, Neko’s mother puts her in a Soviet boarding school – against Neko’s will. All at once her idyllic childhood comes to an end. And numbers are used to add up instead of reindeer and fish. It just can’t go on… This film is based on co-director Anastasia Lapsui’s own childhood memories.
