Synopsis

Sol, c’est Solomon Tapatsiaq Uyarasuk, un jeune Inuit charismatique, acrobate, musicien et poète amateur. Une belle âme torturée par le destin de son peuple et disparue trop tôt à laquelle le film de Marie-Hélène Cousineau et Susan Avingaq rend un vibrant hommage. Célébrant d’abord la vie de ce jeune homme dont la mort soudaine dans une cellule de la Gendarmerie royale du Canada demeure suspecte, les cinéastes mènent leur enquête. Le film cherche alors à retracer les sources et les conséquences de ce drame au sein de la petite communauté de l’Arctique. Le mal-être, les problèmes sociaux mais aussi l’incroyable résilience des Inuits sont ainsi mis en lumière dans ce combat indispensable contre le déni et l’oubli. Pour que Sol ne soit pas mort en vain.

Solomon Tapatsiaq Uyarasuk was a charismatic young Inuk, an amateur acrobat, musician and poet. A beautiful soul, tormented by his people’s lot, who died far too young. This film by Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Susan Avingaq is a stirring tribute to the young man. Starting with a celebration of Sol’s life, which ended suddenly in an RCMP holding cell under suspicious circumstances, the filmmakers shift into an investigative mode, seeking to uncover the tragedy’s causes and its consequences for that small Arctic community. Malaise and social problems,but also the incredible resilience of Inuit, are revealed through the essential struggle against denial and neglect, so that Sol will not have died in vain.
